All the very best for your next exciting chapter - in an equally fab part of the world. As has been said your contributions have been invaluable. Thank you.

Does one leave the kettle full so they just have to flick the switch for the much needed pot of tea or does one empty it out to indicate it has been checked and cleaned and avoid them peering at it with mistrust?

Or switching it on empty?

I do wonder if the answer to these type of problems is to make your T’s and C’s very strict. Mine say that the cottage - and it’s facilities - are only for the use of guests named on the booking form. Of course we don’t mind when gusts have friends in for supper but at least it covers a situation wh...

I agree with all the above. It is indeed the norm. Most potential guests don’t see us as people, just a commodity. This has been exacerbated by the big agencies and “instant booking”. I too thank them and wish them well if they email to say “thanks, but no thanks”. Apart from just being polite, they...

Do you get fed up..............

....when enquirers don’t bother to respond?! I’ve had two this week. Written personal emails, not just a standard response, trying to accommodate their requirements. In one case I had to contact my caretaker to make sure she could do it on an odd day, so she was on standby. Nothing! How difficult is...

I note the use of the phrase “successful claim”. Some years ago I had an issue with either tripadvisor or possibly one of the other similar listing sites. The date of the house after one guest was so bad that I unofficially felt obliged to give my caretaker a bonus payment. Of course I had no paperw...

I couldn't put it better than Ecosse.

Definitely dishwasher. If you were in a hotel you wouldn't have a washing machine.

What! No butter! You can't have a crumpet without butter, and real at that!

To me it reads as though the report's authors can't decide whether they are trying to give Local Authorities the power to regulate the "sharing economy" , typically Airbnbers , or all providers of holiday accommodation. The lack of distinction seems to again create problems. I've long thou...

I leave all the above, and a welcome pack, and in many years I think I've only been thanked once! Even bottles of wine go unmentioned! I'm seriously thinking of abandoning it. Beginning to develop a bit of an attitude!

What an unpleasant experience, and an unpleasant guest. I agree with all that has been said. Try to put it behind you , write a carefully worded response to her review and hopefully move on.

The problem is that the very small jars are nothing more than a single portion really. So whilst it may be a lovely thoughtful gesture to leave a couple, anyone who uses more than that will still have to buy a whole jar - and then leave it for you to throw away - or take it home with them.

Anno, Much as I'm sure we all appreciate your input from a guests point of view I am going to be rather pedantic here. It's not "your home" for the week. The fundamental difference is that in your home, you are responsible for putting right anything that your guests may inadvertently damag...

Done! Thanks everyone.

I offered a refund less £50 and he accepted. I've given my caretaker £35 for having been messed around and shuffled her work to accommodate him.

And you'll be pleased to hear he's not looking for something else! So no traffic delays!
