Newbie buying a chalet in Devon

Post by miacasa »

Hello you friendly bunch of people, just thought I would say hi. Hubby and I have taken the plunge and are very nearly ready to exchange on a 2 bed chalet in Devon. Excited and nervous at the same time. We've been on lots of caravan\chalet type holidays so hopefully our experiences will help us make a success of it. I am so glad that I stumbled across LMH, it will make a big difference and has helped already. I can't wait to get started, Dad is on standby with his trusty paintbrush and Mum with her enthusiasm to clean, hubby will take care of the kids (6+7 years) whilst I get stuck in too.
My initial thoughts once decorated was to put the chalet on www.directholidayhomes.co.uk and then look at getting a website done. I've kind of narrowed it down to using squarespace or promote my place but will have to continue trawling through LMH for advice. Bye for now Smile

Welcome to the forum.

I've not heard of that site before but would be very surprised if spending so little on one relatively unknown site will bring you the business you need. You may need to advertise more when getting started as you have to spend money to make money.

You have found a good resource here on LHM and wish you luck with the new adventure.

That was my thought too Kev, but Miacasa describes her property as a chalet. The site appears to be more specialist in caravans. Not knowing this market, maybe the site generates good business in that market. However, there was only one page of cottages, so if the 'chalet' is more a small cottage then I think it would be generate nil. What is your definition of a chalet Miacasa? Is it a permanently sited large static?

I must admit I've not heard of any mention of this site on LMH however we have used it ourselves to book holidays. I also met up with another chalet owner from the site and she gets 80-90% of her bookings from it so for £59 a year I didn't think I had anything to lose.
You are right in thinking that the chalet is along the lines of a caravan but it's more of a permanent fixture, it's also sited on a well known Holiday Park. We wanted a low risk low cost investment and are dipping our toes in the rental market so to speak. We are a young family, two kids, work full time and hubby does a bit of fire fighting on the side so this is enough for now.

When buying into some 'developments' or 'sites' it is worth being extra cautious. I am sure you have done this, but you may pick up something useful here:
