Is tourism destroying the ambience of Brittany?

Post by Hells Bells »

Discussion in our household as son is doing his French coursework. What do you think, Breton owners? How has the region changed, and is it for the better or worse.

I've only been here 5 years so am no expert but haven't seen any major changes at all with regard to the influence of tourism.
Tourism is an important part of the economy of Brittany, but so too is agriculture! I think the tourism effect is mainly on the coast, but inland I don't think things have changed too much. Rennes is a far more important town than it used to be and is a major centre of telecommunications now, so house prices are high there now as well as on the coast.
The coastline itself has retained its beauty - there is very little tacky commercialism compared to what I remember of the Frrench mid Atlantic coast when I lived there, or indeed Cornwall in the UK. The beaches are unspoilt with very little commerce, if any, and are rarely crowded. Places like St Malo are always packed, even in February, but I still think it is a beautiful town. A lot of the other towns on the coastal area near me completely shut down in winter.
The centre of Brittany (not my area incidentally, around St Brieuc!) still stinks because of the pig farming, so no concession to tourism has been made there!
Agriculture still rules.
