Above ground pool - temporary

Above ground pool - temporary

Post by The Olive Grove »

We've just bought an Intex 12' diameter pool for the use of our guests this season, while we go through the Planning Permission, find a builder etc. excercise for putting in a proper pool.

Has anyone else used one of these, if so any advice on how to look after them - filtering, covering, chemicals or salt - anything really we should know to keep our guests safe and happy.

Hi Margaret,

Last summer we used a 15' Intex pool for our first year which was all of 5 weeks! It made a superb plunge pool on baking days and you could swim about 3 strokes across it, we also had a dolphin in there which was great for the kids.

The only thing I'd say is that the filter and pump are not man enough for the job - do you live on site? We found that the filter clogged up pretty quickly and needed brushing out every few days but that just might be as newbies to pools we didn't have a clue about pool chemistry at the time and on one occasion we arrived to find the water a beautiful bottle green! I think that occasion finished the filter off, it couldn't cope after that and in the end the pump kept failing which wasn't terribly good for only 5 weeks of use!

Great for your own back garden but I think needs very regular maintenance - good luck!

Hi Kathy, thanks for the advice.

We do live on site, so keep an eye on it all the time. Know what you mean about the filter. We had a storm a few nights ago, which dumped a load of Saharan sand into it, which totally clogged the filter. Spent all of Friday afternoon emptying the pool - aggitating the water all the time to lift the sand off the bottom and baling out with buckets first to get rid of most of the sand.

After filling it we replaced the filter with the new one we had just bought, and put on the cover we got at the same time as the filter - hopefully this will help stop the same thing happening again.

Any advice on chemicals would be helpful.

Did you not get a bottom hoover with the pool Margaret? For the sand? I would definitely recommend one of those!

Chemicals we used were just bought from the local supermarket, PH-, PH+ and Chlorine granules which all go into the skimmer basket together with a small testing kit - they all worked quite well.

Hey - not just a photo, I want the full-on movie - Director's cut, loads of extras including the out-takes, and a cardboard cut-out of the Oscar!
