So what is behind these scams?

apologies - you probably think I'm dreadfully naive! I'm fairly new to all of this but could someon explain what these scammers are trying to achieve?

I've recently had a purported 'booking' from someone in the ivory coast wanting to book my chalet in the French Alps for an extended period. He didn't ask any questions just wanted my bank details so that he could pay the whole rent up front. My husband and I were suspicicious. What is this chap trying to achieve? What can he do with my bank details?
