difference between B&B and guest house
The only difference (according to UK Quality in Tourism) is the number of rooms. B&B has up to six rooms, a guest house more. Everything else is the same, I think! We are a guest house with eight rooms but generally known as and called a B&B. If you are letting rooms as a B&B you'll obvi...

gifts to departing guests?
We don't give gifts on guests' departure at our B&B. We do leave a postcard of local a scene (with a postage stamp stuck on it) and some use/take them, some don't. At Easter/Christmas we will put chocs in rooms and when guests have mentioned how much they like a shower gel, moisturising lotion o...

B&B and children
When we first started out we accepted all ages and loved welcoming families with young children. We soon learnt that it wouldn't work as most parents thought it was ok for their children to run around the breakfast room, shout and scream, stand on chairs, thump up and down stairs etc. We saw how our...

color of sheets and towels
The colour has to be white. Not only does this colour look lovely & fresh, but easy to launder too. Tried dark towels but bleach marks soon put paid to that. At least with white towels I can add a dash of bleach to the wash to whiten them. Ater a few years of ironing our own percale bed linen, w...

anyone have a b&b for sale
We bought our B&B which had been running successfully, so not every establishment is sold due to poor income. Others in our area have sold due to retirement. Suppose it depends on the area?

Tea stations
French cricket, we all like our home comforts - not sure why they should 'go elsewhere'. You have to admit there's some pretty awful tea out there!

Tea stations
Sounds like we all offer more or less the same. We are in the UK, Devon, and we just offer tea cups and saucers, kettle, tea bags (not a well known brand, can I mention it?) Also one or two fruit/herbal bags and earl grey/decaffeinated if requested, hot choc sachet, coffee sticks or ground coffee ba...

What breakfast to serve in a B&B?
We all know you can't please everyone (unfortunately). We have all the full English ingredients on the cooked menu, and the veggie option includes potato rosti and LMc veggie sausage. Eggs cooked to guests' preference. Also have smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toast or muffins (which is popular)...

Guests leaving a 'messy' wc advice please
No matter what the star rating, no one should expect someone else to clean their mess. The anti bacterial wipes and gloves were used (hurrah!) so fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

Question re room cleaning
We are accredited to Quality in Tourism and abide by their rules -even if we weren't accredited we'd have the same standards - and the recommendation is that the rooms are serviced every day and rightly so. We have this in our room information booklet, and of course it's the norm for all B&Bs an...

Question re room cleaning
Maybe they forgot to service the room? I did that once in our early days 7 years ago. Never did it again!

Threat of bad review
Same thing happened to us as French Lady. A lovely French couple knocked on our door and told us they were attending a wedding locally on that day. They left early next a.m. on checking their room, our lovely king size bed was sodden. We discovered the email address and contact details were false. O...

Go for it
A lady I know has a similar set up here in Devon. The annexe is just off her kitchen ( it has a bathroom, bedroom and own front entrance so guests don't come through her house). She lets as B&B and either takes a breakfast through to guests, or sits them at her kitchen table. Seems to work well....
