Jimbo: I trained as an engineer and spent a number of years building electronic systems and microchips. It was fun. These days I spend my time teaching people how to do it and I miss the hands-on stuff. That's partly why I enjoy working on websites!

Hi Deb I just took a look at the site and one picture in the gallery does look a bit strange in particular: the kitchen. If you look at the lines on the cornice or the window they look jagged, which means that something strange is happening with the resize. Looking at the code, the image you're disp...

VR Calendars

Hi All I'm helping a client with some tips for a bookings calendar for their vacation rental site and wondering what kinds of systems or sites fellow owners tend to use. I built my own for my places, but I'm looking to see what can be bought and integrated instead. Does anyone have any recommendatio...

I'd say the layout is a bit packed but from an SEO point of view, you've included a lot of useful content on the site so this will help the search engines to rank your pages. There are a couple of tweaks that you could make: - change the page URLs so they are quite descriptive and match the content ...

Here we are a month down the road and there are now 4 favourite vacation rental sites on the lens. Just follow the link above to take a look.

Don't forget you can vote for the ones that you like and you can even promote your own site here if you are proud of it (why wouldn't you be)?

Don't forget to save the PDF file when you've downloaded it, so you can read it later on (in bed, or wherever...)

Blogging is definitely an interesting issue. The main issue is just to make sure you are doing it, since it's such a useful thing to do for connecting with your customers, sharing info, getting feedback, getting ideas straight in your head, etc. As for integrating it into your site, I'd say the main...

Couldn't agree more. IE doesn't support the web standards very well, so it's last on list whether I'm designing websites or browsing them. I always prefer Firefox, Safari or Chrome.

I think even if you ignore the exact stats, you'll be seeing an increasing number of people visiting your sites from smartphones. iPhones, Nexus Ones, even the iPad (from Saturday at 9am!!)

It just goes to show you can't even give stuff away easily these days ;-)

Sorry about the glitch. I tested the link with a number of browsers and all looked OK here.

Thanks for the feedback

What exactly are you trying to open on your mac? If you've downloaded the wordpress installation files, you'll need to upload these to your server and do some configuration tweaks before you'll see anything. The files themselves don't do anything on their own... :-)

Your favourite vacation rental sites?

I built a new Squidoo lens about Vacation Rental Website Design where you can vote for your favourite sites. One of the best ways to create a nice site yourself is to take inspiration from others and that's what this lens is all about. You can add your own site if you want some self-promotion (if yo...

It's slightly more complex but better to build your own website. You get ultimate control over the style and content and domain, plus you can do your own traffic analytics to see where visitors come from and what they do when they get to your site. If you want to start really simple then you could j...

On the other hand, people sometimes prefer to read PDF documents. It's quite nice to sit back and read something that's properly put together where you can focus on 'just' doing the reading, without being distracted by all the other attention seekers on web pages. I'm not saying web pages are badly ...
