I'd suggest it could be a google 'wobble' where your data is moved between servers in their data centers, or they test a new algorithm or something like that.

Yeah, thanks for the Twitter 101, Dave ;-) but most people don't use twitter on twitter.com so the UI is kind of irrelevant... once you've signed up and got to grips with it you tend to access it via an app of some sort. scary how much one excellent brand can permeate your life huh?
