You can avoid all Paypal fees if you ask someone to mark it as a personal payment. They pay no fees and you pay no fees to receive the money.

I'm definitely interested in one of these. We have a Polish cleaner who isn't too good at understanding technical instructions due to the language difference and this device would provide peace of mind. We've also suffered from a burst pipe at our own house so we're more than a bit paranoid about it...

If you ask them to pay by PayPal as a gift and funded from their bank account or debit card then there are no charges to receive money. Some guests may be unwilling to do this, then give them the option to make a regular payment with a surcharge. Also, if they're paying from another country ask them...

Google Maps ban Holiday Lettings?

I looked at our advert on HL today and up popped a message saying - "Google has disabled use of the Maps API for this application. This site is not authorised to use the Google Maps client ID provided. If you are the owner of this application, you can learn more about registering URLs here: htt...

Why is the owner of mycottageholiday.co.uk allowed to post on Lay My Hat? This is a site intended to look after the interests of holiday rental owners.

From what I've seen he doesn't represent the interests of holiday rental owners.

In fact I'm not sure what his business model is.

It's a problem with the entire internet, not just review sites. There's so many untruths that are propagated on the net that it's becoming a very unreliable source of information. You only have to look at any Wikipedia article on something you are knowledgeable about to realise that even so-called t...

Might consider this when the weather gets warmer. Have a look at our place (in my signature) and see what you think.

I also work on rigs so I'm flexible with timing and could do a week's swap at short notice.

I just chanced across a review of our cottage on Mycottageholiday and whilst it's positive it does contain a false allegation of damp in one of the reception rooms which could put some people off booking. I want to know why we weren't consulted before this was posted and what way Mycottageholiday ve...

Best of all, but something of an acquired taste is Vietnamese coffee which is roasted with a sugar coating which gives it a very distinctive taste ditto Spanish coffee (see above) - delicious I'll look out for the Spanish Torrefacto beans. I see it's also a style that is made in France which is how...

I like SE Asian coffee best of all. Sainsbury Sumatra Mandheling and Waitrose Java are both very good. I always drink cafetiere coffee as it's the simplest way of making it. Best of all, but something of an acquired taste is Vietnamese coffee which is roasted with a sugar coating which gives it a ve...

Olympics rentals - price increase or not?

We just had an enquiry for the two weeks of the Olympics for July/August next year. We don't normally get enquiries so far in advance and two week bookings are rare so I'm assuming there's an Olympic connection. I hadn't thought to increase the price for those two weeks and I'll honour the advertise...

That's a strange one. I know Weatherford as I work in oil drilling, but they are never called 'Weatherford Oil' as they're a company providing services to the oil company rather than an oil company themselves.

What else makes you think it's not genuine? Is it just the style of the enquiry

You can avoid any PayPal fees by asking your guest to send the payment as money owed or a personal gift and in your own currency rather than theirs. So long as it is funded from a bank account rather than a credit or debit card you get the full amount with no fees deducted and they pay no fees either.
