He says the insurance has covered 'loss of earnings' to date, but surely the buildings insurance will cover remedial works too? Even if 'subsidence' is to blame, the excess is usually only around £1,000 (unless there is prior history) so the owners will not have to find the purported one hundred grand will they?

Most insurance companies will do all they can to avoid a claim.
I recently had some major structural problems, which were triggered by a burst pipe underground. The insurance would only pay for the repair of the pipe but none of the damage caused by 100m3 of water leaking away under the house.
If I had a hole like that appear in Spain, the insurance would cover nothing.
