Does the UK have top quality holiday cottages?
We are trying to book a holiday break in the UK for next May (14th to 21st) and, so far, have found it numbingly difficult to find anything that looks really comfortable. Just loads and loads of mostly rubbish seems to be thrown up. So where is the good stuff?
We are looking for somewhere in North Yorkshire or the Dales or maybe Northumberland.
Minimum requirements for us are:
- bookable Sunday to Sunday (to fit with other travel plans)
- minimum king size bed
- no leather sofas
- wood burning stove
- decent kitchen - no cheap cooker please
- quiet location
- for 2 people
The closest we have come so far has looked great but has a 4'6" metal framed bed (we would fight all night over the covers and my feet would touch the metal frame...). Come on guys, that's no good!
Or, we find one that looks great, but will only accept Friday arrival. Sigh.
There seems to me a crying need for someone to develop a company that only offers self-catering of a superior quality, with all details, small and big, properly checked out. Anybody?
Any personal recommendations of somewhere nice to stay would also be much appreciated.

This one is usually Fri or Mon changeover but they do say ask if you want to arrive on another day and they will see what they can do.

For me (us), they are cold and uninviting - and if you are not careful you slide off them I like a big squishy sofa that you can really settle in to. Ok, our visits are mostly off season (obviously) when the weather is cooler and wood stoves and hot coffee/whisky are in order. Can I ask why you don't like leather sofas?
Maybe in the summer they are more the thing....
Thanks and I have to agree - we had leather sofas at the apartment we were at last week and I kept sliding off!visitslovenija wrote:For me (us), they are cold and uninviting - and if you are not careful you slide off them I like a big squishy sofa that you can really settle in to. Yes do! I honestly can't fathom why the Brits put up with 4'6" beds. It would never be tolerated on the Continent. So maybe you are loosing business from that....Now Thats got me wondering if I should change our cottage bed for a king size divan!
Can you imagine a quality hotel putting 4'6" beds in their double rooms? They would never survive.
And thanks zebedee - will check out the VE website.
