Joomla and SEO(search engine optimisation)

The place to discuss anything to do with computers, software, hardware, no matter how basic or technical. We all use this stuff, but we don't always understand it!

Joomla and SEO(search engine optimisation)

Post by pendle »

Help!! I wanted a web site designed and not knowing anything about the subject foolishly had it designed by someone using a Joomla template.I still haven't paid for this yet as I am waiting for this person to send me the bill.In the meantime I asked him about SEO and he says he can't do this so I contacted someone else who specialises in SEO and they say I need a new web site designed using dreamweaver as they are not prepared / can't work with Joomla.
So is there anyone out there who can recommend someone who can help me or give me some advice or where to go from here.
Thanks
Pendle

Pendle,

I know nothing about Joomla, and I am really only an amateur in the field of SEO, but I do know enough to suggest that you should not need your site redone (again) in Dreamweaver in order to improve SEO.

If you don't get any better suggestions from a Joomla knowledgable person, please send me a PM with your email address and I'll take a look "behind the scenes" at your website with a view to offering perhaps some more constructive ideas.

Joomla is not a trivial CMS to use, but can be made search engine friendly.

Check out joomlatwork.com and the SEF patch, also the artio joomsef from artio.net

I have a test site at http://wilddarkness.com where I use both of these, and you can see that the titles etc look OK. (Comments not invited about the site, thanks - it's a 'test' site!)

But really it was a bit tricky to get it working - plenty of time on forums etc - and I definitely wouldn't recommend Joomla unless you know what you're doing / want to get your hands dirty / have quite advanced requirements.

When it is setup though, its extremely easy to add articles and so on.

As for recommending someone to help, I'm afraid I don't know anyone but I'm sure the Joomla forums could direct you. It is likely to be cheaper to get your existing site made SEO friendly, than to pay someone to start from scratch with dreamweaver.

Hi Pendle

I use Joomla for everything I do (pretty much) and have quite a bit of experience in using it - however this does not compare to the knowledge available on the http://www.joomla.org website forums.

SEO has been seen as problematic when it comes to any content management system (such as Joomla) but things are changing - or have changed. Search engines can work well with CMS-powered websites.

If you go to the Joomla website mentioned above and visit the "extensions" section you can see some extensions (which kind of plug in to Joomla) to make the site search engine optimised. I've found them very effective and we've had good experience through the use of some of them.

Hope that helps - Please PM me if I can be of any more help.

Cheers - Gareth
