The place to discuss anything to do with computers, software, hardware, no matter how basic or technical. We all use this stuff, but we don't always understand it!

DIY Tripadvisor

Post by Windy »

As i also run a listing site with lodges on our park on it it occurred to me that it might be worth out tripadvisoring tripadvisor and adding a review facility to it.

Normally i can hunt down some free PHP or JS to do stuff I want but I've drawn a blank here. Does anyone have any ideas?

I've actually written my own review page (twice now), and I think with some tidy up it could be installed elsewhere (requires a few lines of code change and manually set up a mySQL database):

BUT:
The first time I used it, was for my daughter's wedding pages (http://tessajay.co.uk/guestbook.php). This only lasted 1 month before it was just overtaken by spammers adding junk content. I did not have any CAPTCHA, and don't really know if that would help ?

The second one (PIMS reviews) is behind a login, so that works fine, and you can see the results at http://www.holidayrentalmanagement.com/reviews.php

I wonder if there is a business opportunity here?

The questions are:
What sort of controls do you need to verify reviews?
Is a hosted solution desirable ?
Hasn't someone else already done this (hosted solution)? (vague memories of a discussion on LMH some time ago)

Interesting Richard

Actually something like your Pims review page with the

the facility for a user to join and login , or a good captcha (reduce spammers)
add a review to one of a limited list of properties
display reviews for a particular property on it's page
display all reviews together
filter reviews before publishing

would be great.
