Exactly what I thought. I grew up my whole life without the benefit of a separate shower. I'm lucky to have survived. .... and I'm living now in an apartment with shower in the bath, which is the norm in this country when you don't have the space.HelenB wrote:You can slip getting out of it if it is a bath was well. No difference. You can also slip in a shower.
Is it best to have a bath as well as a shower?

Personally I do think showers over baths can cause issues as people get older. My parents in law took the major decision to remove theirs for a shower cubicle....and as the sides are easily touched there is little chance of slipping. My mother on the other hand refusd to do the same and finally last month admitted she was quite frightened that she would fall getting out of the tub/shower and not be able to get help (she lives alone).
On a personal note, when I was in my 30's I fell getting out of the shower/bath. ...my foot just went. So I do believe that for some they are a danger.

p.s. we got an anti slip applied to our new bath (doing one of the bathrooms including new fittings). No way would I have a bath without non slip in a rental property.

HG Permanent anti slip is one product. I have a French product and a leaflet for it somewhere, it was on my desk a while back but I think I may have given that to someone.
I hate cleaning and drying shower mats in the three of our showers that didn't have a built-in anti slip surface. Picking pubes out of rubber suckers is such a chore.
This is for stone/marble/tile surfaces only.

Looking into the idea of the anti-slip treatments and the HG stuff doesn't mention suitability for plastic, acrylic or resin - it's tiles and ceramics. It contains hydrofluoric acid which, if I remember the chemistry I learned from Mr White on Breaking Bad, attacks pretty much everything except plastics.
So the search is on for a suitable solution for acrylic etc, unless anyone already knows?

Well , the obvious answer is a mat with rubber stickers underneath, but perhaps a more elegant solution may be these spotsgreenbarn wrote:So the search is on for a suitable solution for acrylic etc, unless anyone already knows?

Agreed, but I was hoping for a less unattractive solution than BathZitz™e-richard wrote:Well , the obvious answer is a mat with rubber stickers underneath, but perhaps a more elegant solution may be these spotsgreenbarn wrote:So the search is on for a suitable solution for acrylic etc, unless anyone already knows?

Though my shower trays all have knobbly bits on them to help grip the feet
I also noticed when perusing shower trays for the en-suite that you can now get matt surfaces, slightly textured, which I assume must be better?

I have just had this supposedly non-slip tray fitted in my new cottage shower enclosure but haven't tested it myself. I am awaiting first guest comments....

Many, many thanks everyone for all your feedback - very helpful..
My plans subsequently developed further in the middle of the night!
I came up with the idea of not only replacing the bath & overhead shower with a walk in shower cabinet - but also moving my washing machine into the bathroom & having it in a cupboard with a tumble drier on top! This would allow me to buy a dishwasher to go into the washing machine space in the kitchen...
At present I don't have a tumble drier or dishwasher (& I'm not keen on washer driers) There is no obvious space for a worktop dishwasher
I wrote to 10 guests asking them for their advice on my 2 options
1. Keep bath and overhead shower
2. Above plan
I received replies from 9 out of 10 guests with a unanimous response in favour of losing the bath & having the shower cabinet, moving washing machine etc!
I also got additional useful feedback e.g Needing improved heating in bathroom, more space for kitchen table (a trickier one). 2 people said they weren't bothered about a dishwasher.
Just hoping my shower cabinet will be big enough - probably 1100 mm by 760 mm (or with luck 800 mm)

Thanks Tavi.
The shower and washing machine cupboard will go where the bath was.
the builder will put in a stud wall to divide the space. He will tile the inside of the stud wall. A shower tray will go in the space with a sliding door ....
I have a similar shower only set up in a shower room in my home.
Hope this makes sense ...
