Many of these rules are made to protect EU residents. When I lived in an EU country, an EU ruling made tax on my Spanish property fairer. Once I left to live in an non EU country, the Spanish could do what they like and the cost to me now is many 1000s Euros extra in tax each year.

The French tried a similar discriminatory tax move and were blocked by the EU. I'm fairly sure the UK government would do the same, simply because there would be no law to stop them.
