We sand down table tops to get rid of the old varnish that is often responsible for the orange colour, then paint the frame but leave the top natural and waxed.
What made our cottage look dated was the black-painted beams in the ceilings. We've painted these white (6 coats!) which has really lifted the interiors. It give much more light and looks more contemporary
