I found this tool last night whilst trying to create my own XML file to submit to google.
http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
all you need to do is type in your URL, the frequency your site changes and priority and click start and it build the XML, Txt, html etc which you can submit to all different search engines.
The limit is 500 pages each time you use it and I dont have any where near 500 page it works out fine.
I submitted it to google last night and they have accepted it.
Oh yeah and it is free!!.
Sitemap generator - Ideal for Google, Yahoo and other engine

From my understanding it makes it more friendly for the search engines to find all the links in your site and how often they are updated.
For example if you add a couple of new pages to your site and you dont want to wait for the engines to crawl through to find it (can take a couple of months), Just generate your XML, upload it to google and there you go, they now know your new pages exist and will index it next time round.
I think that is the main principle behind it all.

You may want to visit other webmaster type discussion forums and read-up on the experiences of others. There is some evidence that unless your website fits the profile in which the Google site map was created, you will get substantially less crawls from Googlebot by using it... crawls may actually stop altogether. Websites that benefit from the site map are those with well over a 100 webpages, organized by directories, and are either dynamic or that get updated often (once or more per week.) Other smaller and static websites should consider not using the Google site map.
One benefit it gave me was a quick heads up if there were problems with any pages and links, and an indication of what search terms are being used to find the site and their average top position; I now know that we are pulling page 1 on Google for some terms, and not necessarily the obvious ones.paolo wrote:What is the benefit of doing this?

If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!!

Wait? for a couple of months? I haven't looked into sitemaps as of yet but just recently (less than 2 weeks ago) I drastically changed the way in which my site was tagged.Tommy wrote: For example if you add a couple of new pages to your site and you dont want to wait for the engines to crawl through to find it (can take a couple of months), Just generate your XML, upload it to google and there you go, they now know your new pages exist and will index it next time round.
The result has been staggering. Google is now indexing my tag sections whenever someone types in a descriptive word along with their search criteria.
e.g. quiet secluded villa holiday andalucia (no 3 on my screen and I haven't even optimised the title yet )
So, never mind sitemaps, tag your content.
Garri,
I have been looking also in to the new buzz word "tags" but I am not quiet sure how they all work and how you are meant to implement them into the site.
Do you have any good sites where I can read on this further as it seems to be the new thing for web design.
Thanks
