The beauty of the internet is that it allows us to shop around, compare and view others comments on forums etc.

Simply choosing the cheapest policy might be a false economy. Try searching Google and read through the different insurers policy documents to check what you think/expect to be covered actually is.

Most policies cover major disasters e.g. fire/flood etc similar to your main home insurance, but specialist cover is also needed for holiday homes- some points to consider:

-if you are holiday letting check your insurer allows it and you will need public liability insurance to cover accidents to your guests
-what happens when you need to make a claim, will they visit your damaged property?
-are you covered for loss of rental income if your home becomes uninhabitable?
-what happens when you leave your property unoccupied, does the insurer exclude certain cover?
-are you covered for damage caused by guests?

I can recommend http://www.schofields.ltd.uk who give £5m public liability and cover when unoccupied/let.

Ask your neighbours who they use, are they happy?

For some reason I thought that you were obliged to use an insurance company from the country in which you live, like car insurance. If this is not the case, I'll shop around in the UK as the limitations of the French insurance for gites do not suit the habits of my UK guests, who may not all have personal liability insurance as French guests do, which covers the guest damage to rental properties.

Actually, I think it is rather the other way round. In many cases insurers can't offer cover outside their country of operation. Clearly contents insurance is an exception and I suspect building insurance may be as well. My insurers offer what they call Foreign Home policies and their literature refers to buildings as well as contents.

I’m not selling anything but if anyone wants to know the name and address of the broker I use in the UK they only have to send me a PM.
