Can anybody help me? Sometimes, when I've tried to upload photos to listings, I'm told they won't be accepted because they're not jpeg or jpg. What mine say is that they're JPEG, and they're refused.
What's the difference, and how do I convert from one to the other? I'm using an Olympus compact FE 110 with 5 megapixels.
Thanks,
Pauline

Oh no, they're not too big. I've resized them well within the limit.
I didn't realise I could rename them jpg. I didn't think of that - I'll give it a try.

I've looked at it again, and no, I can't rename them. It isn't the name - the JPEG or JPG comes after type: and isn't by the name.

Ah, okay, I thought the listing site might be shortcutting and just checking the file extension. It isn't the name - the JPEG or JPG comes after type: and isn't by the name.
I believe the file type is embedded in the file headers and is set by your camera or your image manipulation program. It may be possible to change it under some advanced settings, but I've never done it (and it may not be possible at all for security reasons). When you upload the file, the listing site is checking the header and only allowing things of type "jpg" or "jpeg".
If you can't manually change the file type, I suggest one of two things:
- 1) Open and re-save the file in another program that will change the file type to the uncapitalized version (what Helen suggested); or
2) Contact the listing site and ask them to allow JPEG and JPG file types, not just the uncapitalized version. This should be a simple thing for their web programmer to change.

To answer all the suggestions:
I use Picasa, but the listing sites' browsers don't browse Picasa. I have to export into an Adobe file.
I have in fact found a very timeconsuming and cumbersome way of changing JPEG to jpg, which has allowed me to upload to one site, but as soon as I've uploaded it, it defaults back to JPEG, so if I want to use the pic again I've got to go through the rigmarole again.
Yes, it might be worth contacting Olympus if the problem lies with them, though I don't know what they could do for existing cameras.
I was putting some listings on ADZOOKS - has anyone come across them? They're regional, and you have to list on each region, but I thought they might be worth a try.

I've just realised that Helen says her files are jpg when downloaded to Picasa. I wonder how that is, because mine are still JPEG.
Does anyone know what difference it makes?

After you have copied the images to your hard disk, open 'My Computer' & navigate to the folder containing the images.Topcat wrote:I have in fact found a very timeconsuming and cumbersome way of changing JPEG to jpg, which has allowed me to upload to one site, but as soon as I've uploaded it, it defaults back to JPEG,
In the Windows Explorer window, click Tools | Folder options, then the View tab, then uncheck the box next to 'Hide extensions for known file types'
Highlight the image file, press F2, then you can change the extension from .JPG to .jpg, ignore the warning.
Regards
Cheers, Nick, I'll give it a try.
