Window Shutters!!

Post by Big Sis.. »

Hi All,

I expect a lot of you have the Roller Window Shutters on your props.

Well ours seems to get broke at times by the guests[either they pull em up too hard or let em drop or both]
Its a bit of a pain.
Ours are that upvc stuff and I know you can get metal ones.
I wondered if any of you have the metal ones?.
Do you find theyre stronger and do they have to have a lot of Maintenance[painting etc]

Im trying to decide on replacing ours with metal.
But theres a lot of em,
[on the two houses] and dont want to give Hubby too much more painting to do..

Any Suggestions??

Thanks!!

Can't help you much Ros, except to say that we have all wooden shutters here. and all painted blue! They take some fairly serious upkeep in terms of painting each year, so I'd be tempted to stick with the PVC, LOL!

We have wood too but if I was an absent owner like you Ros and it was chopice betwen metal and PVC I think I would go with the PVC - much as I hate it used instead of wood.

Ros I don't have the pull up ones (so can't help on the 'strength' question)...I have the other shutter type with the slats and they're in metal. There's no maintenance whatsoever with them - so I would imagine you wouldn't have much to do with them if you did get metal.

Thanks Mouse,

Mine are the Roller blind type with plastic slats on.
We are always having to replace on or two of the shutters on them.[usually at the bottom where they been dropped too quickly]
Is your metal coated then[ours are white] dont they ever need painting??

Thanks Enid and Stu as well

Ros, the metal ones that you have seen are actually made of aluminium. They are lighter and stronger than the plastic ones and no, they don’t need any maintenance apart from cleaning.

Breaking slats is a common problem and it tends to happen more often when the blinds are big, like balcony windows because of the weight of the blind. One good solution would be to install electric motors on the big ones. This motors wind and unwind at a constant speed and they stop at the right times. This would stop people pulling and dropping. Although it may be expensive to install, it may be a good investment in the long term.

But it isnt easy is it...

Thanks!!

Good suggestion Mon! I'd go with that Ros if you could - perhaps on the most used windows at least?

No Ros - they don't need painting, they're coated with a colour and you can choose from a wide variety of colours - and as Mon said, they're aluminium and its very sturdy and light. It also doesn't scratch easily.

I have the motorised plastic roller shutters on the larger windows and french doors and also manual ones, after a few initial problems ie going past the stops (motorised ones)either way they seem to be alright now,I have asked my guests to leave them up throughout their stay except in individual bedrooms at night were they can lower them to keep out the early light, fingers crossed I wont have problems but I am never confident they be trouble free.

As Mouse says, they are coated in a variety of colours. Well, not that each blind has a variety of colours, although you could, really, I guess, if you wanted to. (I can confuse too, even myself).

Balcony ones break because they are sooooo heavy. I have experience on that, believe me. You have to take the cover from over the balcony where the roll is, get it off the “tracks, and then it’s so difficult to get the slate off because you have to slide it and there’s no room. You are right, BSis, a blind repair requires its fair share of blaming and swearing. It comes with the job.

Hi Ros - I've got a motorised alu shutter over my patio doors and it works really well.

Only problem is that 2 dingbats in two years have managed to lower it onto a chair and bust it. The big plus is - they can't wriggle out of their responsibility, cos the shutter is visibly stuck, and so you can charge the repair out of their deposit!

In general though, I think they're great.
