A solar pool cover will add 5 - 6C to the water temperature.

A heat exchanger will heat the pool more than solar, but costs more to run.

Gianni, there's a load of information on here if you just do a search.

Here's a few threads for starters though:

I think the majority of owners here who heat their pools had been advised, as we were, to go for a heat exchanger.

As soon as we can afford to heat our pool, that will be our preferred option too. :) We were told that solar heating is a lot more expensive to instal - and the comparable running costs seem a bit debatable.

I thought Mark was only suggesting a cover, not a heater.

I'm certainly impressed with those numbers. A solar cover would be plus/minus a thousand Euro... and probably worth it in the sunnier climates for those shoulder months.

Oh, missed spotting that - thanks for pointing it out Richard - a solar cover would be quite an attractive option for some I expect too!

(LV, are they the same as an 'abri', or does an abri not have solar panels on it?)

I've recently put a solar cover on my own pool. It's like industrial bubble wrap. Cut to size a 6 x 3m kidney shape was 180 Euro to supply and fit. Just got out of the water which is 34C :D

It's boiling hot here today. We have done a back wash topped up the pool and not covered it - it's still 28° - hotter than that doesn't give the cooling off dip I cetainly needed today.

The solar covers are what is also refered to as a summer cover. It is NOT the same as heating the pool. They are a great idea, and if you have a heated pool you really need these to keep the heat in at night.

However - for a rental property you cannot describe the pool as being heated just because it has a summer cover, nor can you rely on guests to use the cover properly and to recover the pool once they get out of it.

We have oil heating, but given the price of fuel these days we will be changing in the near future.

A heat pump (also refered to as a heat exchanger) is probably the most efficient pool heating around and is what we will be buying just as soon as we can afford it.

It was 32C at about 5pm and now 28C.

I take to solar cover off about 2pm each afternoon and then put it back after our last swim, normally around midnight. The water temp will drop 1 or 2 degrees during that time but from 8am the pool is in full sun so it warms up pretty quickly.

My neighbour's pool, same size but no cover is 27C. I'm confident it will extend our swimming time by 3 or 4 weeks either end of the season so the outlay seems worthwhile.

I don't rent this one out as I live in it full time now.

With this sort of system that's crucial of course.

If only we got the income without having to have the guests!
