Venice & Lake Garda

Post by Duchess »

Hello fora,
Havent been on for a while... hubby and I are going to Venice and Lake Garda in Sept - 2 nights in Venice, the rest in Lake Garda. We've nothing booked accommodation wise and do not have a hefty budget either. So I am either looking at B&B's or hotels. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Hi,

We went to Lake Garda for a couple of days in late April and it took us a while to decide which place to stay in. The weather at that time of year dictated to stay in the south (otherwise both Limone and Malcesine were contenders further north, where you get more dramatic scenery). Anyway we ended up choosing Bardolino over Sirmione, and were glad we did. Bardolino has a lovely boardwalk which is great for promenading in the evening alongside the lake, and lots of gelateria! Our favourite restaurant was Il Commercio and we stayed at the Color Hotel www.colorhotel.it (it's slightly strange as hotels go!! the staff are overfriendly to the point where we felt they were part of a cult!!! But service very good and nice pools/bar area, plus the best breakfast on our trip. It's just a few mins walk from the centre). We visited Sirmione for the day by boat (avoid weekends) which was worth doing but it is more touristy than Bardolino so we were glad we didn't stay. We also went to Desenzano, which was where we arrived by train and then got the ferry to Bardolino, and that was nice too. If you want any more info just ask, and if you think to book the hotel we can suggest which rooms would be better to ask for. By the way if you are travelling from Venice by train then it's only slightly more to go first class, and well worth it!
Cheers
