A chicken has taken up residence on the streets of a busy working-class district of Madrid and has won the locals' respect and affection by scratching out an existence in defiance of traffic, predatory dogs and suspicious cats. The plucky chicken (above,) named Bienvenida, has been living in the Carabanchel district for more than a year, and has even started laying eggs in a roadside bush.

"She's very clever," says shopkeeper Pilar Jimenez. "She knows not to go out on the highway. I feed her bread, lettuce and apple, but she is still very small."[/i]
